Italy’s Riviera: Cinque Terre

Exploring Italy’s most remote and romantic stretch of Riviera, we visit five tiny port towns: dramatic Vernazza, surrounded by vineyards; reclusive Corniglia, high on its bluff; pastel Manarola; hardscrabble Riomaggiore; and the pint-sized resort of Monterosso. Fishing for anchovies, sipping wine out of rustic barrels, and savoring twinkling Mediterranean vistas, we enjoy the ultimate Riviera adventure. | © 2014 Rick Steves’ Europe

Liguria is a very underestimated corner of this country. I live in Sestri Levante 40 minutes from five lands and I can assure you that what is said in this video is true! For those who would like to visit this part of Italy I would also like to recommend an excursion to Portofino from Santa Margherita Ligure. Greetings from Italy

hi Rick,…planing .. …. to travel to CT next year. end of May (good month?) can I do the 5 towns in one day? I think Monterosso is the one I liked best..  and the little one… I found a tour that takes you from Portovenere by boat to Vernazza and then train or boat to the 5 towns, I would like to walk the Monterosso..  I would be coming from Florence… by train to La Spezia..  or… would it be easy to do it on your own by train to Monterosso and by boat or train along the towns? your feedback will be greatly appreciated..thank you

What is amazing is that if you go in land from 5 terre, there are hundreds of beautiful towns in the forests and mountains that are not known. They can be visited by car through mountains and valleys. One such town is GROPPO, near Sesta Godano ( There are no tourists , you can be sure) about 25 Mi. from 5 terre. Another town of great interest is VARESE LIGURE which has a great Castle. Another place of interest is CHUSOLA which is very remote . Driving through these areas is fantastic. One great drive, From Varese Ligure is to go to the CENTO CROCI PASS at 1200 meters, and then to the CAPELLETTA PASS where the views are fantastic.

Just got back from Italy and the CT about a month ago. I fell in love with this beautiful country and the CT at first sight with my eyes. Please enjoy everything it has to offer you when you travel there. The Italian people are extremely friendly and want you to have a good time and want you to enjoy your stay there. Be careful on the erosion boulders that protect the little towns of the CT. I slipped on those huge rocks and basically did a pin ball maneuver hitting rock after rock til my resting place was wedged between 4 rocks with my feet sticking up in the air. Didn’t help that I was recovering from too much delicious vini from the night before. Thankfully, I was not hurt and some good Samaritans came to my rescue helping me. Oh, and Focaccia is just so delicious it is not even funny.. Ciao!!
