For our trip up the Eiffel Tower, we bought our tickets through an external TripAdvisor company called ‘Viator’ and it was well worth it. Our tour guide gave us a small history of the tower (for example it used to be painted red, it was only built for an expo and was intended to be there for only 2 years and the citizens of Paris used to hate it). The tour guide then took us up to the first deck in the funicular and let us go do what we wanted and go up to the higher decks for the rest of the trip! I highly recommend this option because you are guided to the right entry, you are in the hands of a highly experienced tour guide and you get a mini history of the tower as well!!

If you visit Paris , be prepared for dog shit, the rudest people on the planet, cars that will run you over any time you try to cross the street , and people that have NO concept of customer service, common courtesy or any rules or laws. If you need help try to find a non French person if possible. and lower your expectations as if you are in a 3rd world country because you are.

David W says:

In France, we have the most romantic city in the world, beaches, the French Alps, medieval castles, world class gastronomy, fashion and culture, but beneath this veneer also lies many tourist targeted scams (http://travelscams.org/europe/common-tourist-scams-france/) perpetrated by criminals.

Do be wary of these scams: the gold ring trick, pickpockets, string/bracelet scam, rose scam, unscrupulous taxi drivers, “helpful” people, petition scam, beggars, lost soul scam, gambling scams and many more!

Marquis de Dijon says:

3:48. Personally myself, I would -not- suggest bypassing Versailles. Why is that? A visit to Versailles is to almost understand the scope , the beauty and architecture of Paris, and indirectly, France as a nation, yet on a scale that during the 17th century, France was considered the powerhouse of Europe. So much history is learned through Versailles (and 30 minutes out of central Paris is really not far, at all) and I would jump and think that flying out of Paris and NOT seeing Versailles is a total disservice to your visit to France. If for nothing else, Versailles with over 700 rooms and salons, is this most grand scale palace, considered many, and rightfully so, to be the most beautiful palace on Earth; try not to miss Versailles !
